It’s okay to admit it. Caravans have a number of unfortunate misconceptions. When we think of them, many of us imagine clapped out and rust pocked units that have seen better days inside and outside. And those who are unfamiliar with staying in one may assume that the experience can’t possibly compare with a couple of weeks in a swanky hotel.
But this mentality misses the point. And those who take a trip in one are often quick to change their preconceptions. If you’re looking for a way to explore more of our fair British isles (not to mention taking your faithful four-wheeler across the channel and into Europe) this is the ultimate way to do it. And no amount of binge-watching Top Gear on Dave can convince us otherwise!
A caravan gives you the best of both worlds, the perfect interstice between a hotel and a home away from home. Whether you have negative preconceptions about caravans or you’re on the fence about whether or not to take the plunge, here are 4 reasons why we bloomin’ love caravans…
They afford you freedom and autonomy
For most of us, going on holiday inevitably involves taking concessions to accommodate the tour operators or the hoteliers. You have to wait until after 3pm to check into your hotel and make sure you skedaddle by 11. You have to plan your itinerary around what’s available, rather than what you want. However, holidaying in a caravan puts you quite literally in the driving seat.
You can go where you want, when you want and enjoy the ultimate family holiday entirely on your own terms.
You can always take your pets
If you have pets, you likely don’t feel like it’s a proper holiday unless they’re with you. Moreover, kennel and cattery fees can add an unwelcome layer of cost to your getaways. While there are lots of pet-friendly hotels and BnBs all over the country, they can be limited in some areas.
When you have a caravan, you never need to worry about finding pet-friendly accommodations (or have to feel guilty when they make a mess). You can take your pets wherever you go… Although it might be best to leave the goldfish at home.
It’s surprisingly affordable and a potential money spinner
With so many flexible financing options you may be surprised by just how affordable it can be to own a caravan, especially if you only need a modestly sized one. Indeed, joining a managed letting scheme may allow you to make good money leasing out your caravan to other holidaymakers when you’re not using it.
Just make sure you have the right insurance policy to keep your caravan protected while also keeping your overhead costs manageable. You may well find that renting out your caravan allows you to mitigate most or all of the running costs.
You don’t have to take a leap of faith… you can try it for yourself!
The great thing about caravans is that you don’t have to blind-buy one to see if this special kind of holiday is for you. Simply rent one (you may find that the cost actually compares favourably to a hotel) and find out for yourself.
Don’t worry, we promise not to be smug about it if you end up falling in love.
